Auto Maintenance  

30 HOURS (10 Weeks) - $205.00 plus registration fee – Next Class Begins January 14th, 2019

This is a hands-on course in basic auto repair and preventive maintenance. Maintenance can include Basic Breaks, Tune-ups, Struts, Alignments and Balancing. Students may work on personal automobiles to complete minor repair project. Safety glasses required.

Carpentry and Home Repair

Build Your Own Adirondack Chair/Basic Woodworking

Basic Home Repair  

30 HOURS (10 Weeks) - $205.00 plus registration fee - Next Class Begins Monday January 14th, 2019

This 10-week course introduces the basic fundamentals of electricity, plumbing, and carpentry. Students will become familiar with the concepts – and the most commonly used hand tools – of each of these three disciplines and will gain hands-on know-how. By the end of the course, they should be able to recognize each tool, describe its features and common uses, and be comfortable using it for basic home repair. The objective of the course is to empower students – through guided experience – with the confidence to take on many common household repairs, because they will be familiar with basic home electrical, plumbing, and carpentry systems and will have practical experience using the tools of each trade.

Basic Masonry Home Projects

30 HOURS (10 Weeks) - $180.00 plus registration fee - Next Class Begins Monday January 14th, 2019

This is a hands-on course. Projects such as walkways and patios using paving bricks, retaining walls use of the new interlocking block and the building and repair of brick stairs will be demonstrated. The student will also learn how to build both brick and block walls with mortar and stucco finish. Safety Glasses required

Basic Woodworking

This course is for the beginner or for those who have some experience and will cover the Carpentry and Woodworking fundamentals as well as emphasize familiarity with a wide variety of hand tools and power tools. Prerequisite: Excel 2016 Beginner or equivalent experience

Learn intermediate Excel 2016 skills by creating and modifying charts, working with themes and cell styles, applying conditional formatting, working with date functions, navigating with cell names, and linking and sorting multiple worksheets.

Learn advanced Excel 2016 skills by creating, sorting, and filtering tables, generating subtotals and using outlining tools, utilizing advanced functions including lookups, analyzing data with pivot tables, and creating and running macros.

QuickBooks is a powerful accounting system for small businesses. Learn how to manage and enter business transactions, track company sales, setup customers, receive payments from customers, make bank deposits, write off bad debt, create customer statements, and produce sales reports. Manage expenses by setting up and paying vendors, printing checks, tracking company credit cards, paying sales tax, and producing accounts payable reports. Reconcile bank and credit card accounts and learn how to handle bounced checks.

Jan. 7th - Winter Comfort Foods 

New England winters call for hearty, wholesome, comforting foods! Learn classic culinary tips and kitchen techniques while preparing delicious one-pot recipes sure to please family and friends alike.  Our menu may include recipes such as Roasted Cauliflower Mac & Cheese, Lamb & Phyllo Pot Pie, savory Farmhouse Coq au Vin, and old-fashioned Rice Pudding for dessert.  Hands-on cooking, culinary instruction, printed recipes, and a hearty winter meal at the end of the evening.   

Feb. 4th - Soup, Chowder, & Stew 

Join us as we warm up in the kitchen preparing steaming pots of hearty soup, chowder, & stew all while learning classic culinary techniques and helpful kitchen tips along the way.  Our menu may include recipes such as Rosemary, White Bean, & Butternut Stew with Winter Pesto, Spicy Clam & Chorizo Chowder, and a delicious 'Baked' Winter Vegetable Soup.  We'll be sure to have a bread basket on the table too!  Class includes hands-on cooking, culinary instruction, printed recipe book, and a wonderful warming winter meal at the end of the evening.

March 4th - Eggs All Ways!  

Spring is soon arriving and it's a perfect time to change it up in the kitchen with Spring brunch in mind.  Join us as we cook with farm-fresh eggs, learning classic culinary methods and techniques while preparing creative recipes perfect for everyday breakfast, holiday brunches, dinner, and dessert! Our menu will include recipes such as perfect soft & hard-boiled eggs with Green Goddess Herb Mayo, Poached Eggs in Tomato Sauce with Chick Peas & Feta, Canadian Bacon & Asparagus Frittata, and Crepes with Lemon Curd, Ricotta, & Berries.  Class includes hands-on cooking, culinary instruction, printed recipe book, and an 'eggcellent' brunch at the end of the evening. 

Classes are for one evening only.  All Classes are 6:00 until 9 PM at Whittier's Poet's Inn Restaurant and Kitchen

Landscape Design

Landscape Design

18 Hours (8 weeks) - $140 plus registration fee - Class Canceled - Next class September 2019

Examine the nature of visual experience, and get a sound useful introduction to the primary properties of visual elements.  Learn to design attractive, comfortable and functional outdoor areas that increase curb appeal, and add years of beauty, enjoyment, and real value to your home.   We will study the basic principles of design and their direct application to landscaping:  planting beds (foundation, perimeter and privacy plantings); gardens (herbs and vegetables); "hardscaping" (walls, walkways, patios); plant materials (trees, shrubs, ground covers, and perennials).  Participants have the opportunity to produce a landscape design for a residential property of their choice. Materials: pencil, notebook, site photos.  

Additional materials for subsequent classes:  ruler, compass, protractor, square, French Curve.  Site plan of the property with boundaries and footprint of the house is extremely helpful.

Photography

Digital Photography, Retouching and Printing using a Digital SLR Camera

18 HOURS (6 weeks) - $140 plus registration fee - Next Class Begins Monday January 16th, 2019

This course is intended for people who are enthusiastic beginners. Students will learn how to use their camera's manual settings rather than rely on "auto" mode. Emphasis will be placed on image composition. Photo editing essentials such as retouching, color correction, cropping, and converting images to black and white will also be presented. Students will print their completed work on an Epson professional photo printer.

Digital SLR camera (or high-end point and shoot camera with manual settings) and two 1GB memory cards required.

Sewing - Project Base Sewing Class

 

18 HOURS (6 weeks) - $140 plus registration fee - Class Closed for Spring 2019

This class is geared for participants with various sewing skills. You will pick a project and take it from beginning stages to completion. Each participant can complete one to as many projects as they would like. Some suggestions:

  • Personal Accessories such as a tote bag , cosmetic bags, fabric handbags, ipad/ereader holders and aprons.

  • Home Accessories such as decorative pillows, interchangeable decorative pillow covers, casserole carriers, table runners, table cloths, and chair cushions.

Requirements: Sewing machine, scissors, materials to complete your project (fabric, interfacing, pillow foams, foam, pins, and any specific notions.

Instructor will provide patterns, written instructions, serger, and iron.

BEGINNING ESL: LISTENING, SPEAKING, AND  CONVERSATION  (80 hours, 16 weeks) $495 plus registration fee

This is a beginning course designed to develop listening and oral communication skills and build the confidence of beginning-level students. This course is designed for students that can understand some words in English. It is not appropriate for pre-beginning ESL students. Regular small-group and individual speaking and listening practice help students feel confident in discussing activities such as food, money, and community. The lessons are based on realistic situations/ needs and include beginning literacy and grammar skills.
